What Really Makes Us Grow

“Personal relationships are the fertile soil from which all advancement, all success, all achievement in real life grows.”

Ben Stein

If you think back to when you were in school you probably remember that infamous lesson learning the parts of a flower as well as how both the sun and rain are needed in order to help keep the flower alive. Simple, straightforward and to the point right? From this viewpoint we are strictly looking at things at its surface level. The end result. The final product that is seen by all. However, it is truly what lies beneath the flower, deep within the soil, where the nutrients are nourishing that flower. The soil helps anchor the flower’s roots, providing a solid foundation, making sure that the flower will continue to grow and flourish.

In today’s quote a comparison is made that soil is similar to that of personal relationships. Like the soil nourishes the flower it is through our personal relationships and interactions with others, no matter how long or brief the encounters may be, that truly nourishes our well being. It ultimately results in the continual growth for us as individuals. Personal relationships = individual growth for all parties involved.

When I think back to all the personal relationships I have had through the years, I know it is because of them, what they have given to me, has made me into who I am today. For that I am eternally grateful and it is my hope that I can do the same for them in return.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards continuing to foster your relationship skills with others?
