Perfectionism Is Just A Myth

“Perfectionism is a twenty-ton shield that we lug around, thinking it will protect us, when in fact it’s the thing that’s really preventing us from taking flight.”

-Brene’ Brown

I’m going to let you in on a secret as to the biggest myth that is out there in my opinion: that perfectionism exists. I’m here to tell you it doesn’t and even if it did, it wouldn’t last. So my question is why do we think it is possible and also why do we put so much pressure on ourselves to achieve this impossible feat? If you are an educator, you will sure know what I mean. And even if you aren’t I’m sure in whatever you do, you more than likely have experienced this long lost effort of being perfect. It’s like the Loch Next Monster: it doesn’t exist.

In today’s quote author and speaker Brene’ Brown hits the nail right on the head when she describes perfectionism as like a twenty-ton shield that although we think is going to protect us, it actually hurts us because it is something that weighs us down and prevents us from being our authentic selves. We need to drop that shield, and allow us to take flight just like Brene’ says. We need to be vulnerable and realize that with mistakes comes lessons learned along the way. Lessons learned that will continue to refine us but our mistakes will never define us. So let’s make sure that we control our thoughts and our actions to prevent ourselves from heading down a path that will only leave us frustrated and lost.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards managing yourself better?
