Our Survival Guide
“One day you will tell your story of how you’ve overcome what you’re going through now, and it will become part of someone else’s survival guide.“
When you purchase a lawnmower or even a car what do they always come with? An owner’s manual. As you know this manual can contain such things as safety and assembly instructions as well as troubleshooting problems as they arise. Unfortunately as we already know, there is not an owner’s manual or survivor’s guide for us as we live out our lives. But is that necessarily true or do we not realize it is right in front of us? Our experiences, some that have been good and some that may have not have been have contributed to our own survival guide. We have learned from each experience and sometimes that meant overcoming certain obstacles that seem insurmountable at the time.
In today’s quote the author reminds us that the struggles we may have or will encounter throughout the course of our lives allows us to tell our own story to someone else, whether it be through the journals we write or through conversation, that may in fact become the tools necessary for someone else to use and apply towards their own survival guide. In retrospect I have learned from others, which includes my parents and grandparents, skillsets and mannerisms on how to deal with the unexpected. By watching them and the experiences they were encountering helped me fill my own toolbox when I reached adulthood. Their teachings added to my own survival guide and I never realized it until now.
My own experiences growing up and even now allow me to utilize the five areas of Social Emotional Learning each and every day in the differing experiences I can encounter within a typical day. Be self aware of how I relate to the world, manage my emotions while being socially aware of others and their feelings, allows me to be responsible in my decision making and continue to foster and grow my relationship skills with others. These all contribute to my own moral compass which I look as being my own personal owner’s manual and/or guide. This guide is still be written every day but it is my hope that others can learn from my own story and it can become a part of someone else’s survival guide.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards defining/refining your own moral compass?
