The Seeds That You Plant
“Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds that you plant.”
-Robert Louis Stevenson
Often times we have the tendency to judge things at the end of a process but as Author Robert Louis Stevenson points out in today’s quote it is really at the beginning that counts most. He says that we shouldn’t judge each day by the harvest we reap but by the seeds we plant. We are so quick to have an opinion on how something went, good or bad, without really taking the time to see all the time and effort it took to prepare for that “great harvest.” An example that comes to mind is my daughter who is turning 20 years old next month. My wife and I see before us the woman she has become; one that has a heart of gold, puts the needs of others first and will be there for anyone in their time of need. However, when I read Stevenson’s quote I think to all of those seeds we planted way back then as she was growing up: how to treat others, love one another and being kind. This all lead and contributed to what we see today.
In life it is all about the process. Never for get that. As an educator when I taught in the classroom my development of my lesson plans were those seeds that I planted. Those seeds were then transferred into what my students learned and only grew when they applied this new knowledge into their everyday lives. As we know seeds only become flowers or plants if we take the time to nourish them and care for them which is what we must do with everything we try and accomplish. It takes time, dedication and patience to get them to blossom into that harvest that Stevenson mentions. Once we focus on this process from the outset and become more aware of its impact, we can better ensure the roots of those seeds will become strong ones.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards improving your self awareness?
