Celebrate Our Diversity

“We are more similar than we are different. Celebrate our diversity.”

-Miles McPherson

The word diversity is often used as a sort of buzz word in today’s social media, schools and businesses. But the question remains if society itself truly understands what diversity means. The official definition of diversity is the practice or quality of including or involving people from a range of different social and ethnic backgrounds and of different genders, sexual orientations, etc. Key words within this definition are words like practice, quality, including, involving. Each focuses on multiple avenues that must be considered in order to truly understand and apply the word diversity in various facets of our lives.

Despite what some may think practice never makes perfect but rather it makes improvement. We do our do diligence and research ways in which to better ourselves and include and/or involved others but it comes to the actual application of doing those things that gives us the necessary data we need to adjust our diversity sails in order to truly embody what it means to be diversified.

Quality accentuates us towards having us live up to a higher standard for not only ourselves but for the society at large. Quality also is seen within the relationships we establish and the efforts made on both sides to sustain open lines of communication, honesty, and trustworthiness.

Including and involving. Both are are important. When you include someone in something you make them a part of something greater than yourself. When you involve them they are no longer on the outside looking in. They are in the mix and help to build something greater than they could have possibly imagined. And the beauty behind it all is that it is all, from the very beginning until the very end done together. In unity.

As bestselling author, speaker and the Senior Pastor of the Rock Church and Academy in San Diego, California Miles McPherson stated in today’s quote we must celebrate our diversity by realizing we are more similar than different. Change can never take place or even take hold until we recognize this simple but crucial fact that we are one in the same.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards improving your social awareness?
